NINA'S ODYESSY BY SUSAN SMITHThe Merriam-Webster dictionary defines odyssey as "a long wandering or voyage usually marked by many changes of fortune." Nina's Odyssey by first time author, Susan Smith, captures this definition in this delightful and wonderful tale of Nina, who as an old lady recalls her life. The odyssey begins with a very young girl in Russia going off to St. Petersburg to a ballet academy. Her interest and talent in ballet attract the attention of several benefactors and her life begins to take sudden and unexpected changes.
Throughout the book, Nina experiences a string of sudden changes of fortune. At 17 she suddenly finds herself as a penniless widow on the streets of Paris. The next phase of her life begins as housekeeper and soon to be new mother. All of a sudden she has another odyssey as she is swept off her feet by a handsome "prince" and ends up in Norway for the next twenty years. During the beginning stages of World War II she encounters a childhood girl friend, and they sail to New York for safety.
In Greenwich Village her past catches up with her as she suddenly encounters her brothers whom she has not seen in almost forty years. Not long after this rather devastating experience, she receives tragic news from Norway. The shock is so great that she ends up in a convent where she is gently nursed back to health. All of a sudden we find Nina as a senior citizen in Australia as a companion to the brother of one of the nuns.
There is also a lot of mystery and suspense in this fine novel as she has been given something very special by her first husband. Fearing the pursuit of his sister to regain this "special something", she is always cautious of her surroundings and the need to keep her identity safe. She never reveals this secret possession to anyone. The reader is kept in suspense as to what will ultimately happen to this "special something."
Nina is a very strong and determined young woman; however, her goals change dramatically as her odyssey progresses. The author has several other strong and interesting characters which appear in each of the odysseys. Because an odyssey is sudden, Nina often must leave those who were special to her, never to see or hear from again.
Susan Smith's talent extends to portraying accurately what is going on in history in the several countries where the story takes place. Nina's early years are at the beginning of the Russian Revolution, then as a teen she is in France at the beginning of World War I, and finally in Norway and her escape to America during World War II.
The book is only a little over 200 pages, but the story is so gripping that it is hard to put down. This book is so engrossing that I read it again in preparation for this review. I enjoyed it even more the second time. I am looking forward to Susan's next book. I hope it will be soon.
